When it’s nice, do it twice. Those were the words of 2019 Chutney Soca Monarch champions, Nishard Mayhroo and Neval Chatelal. The defending champions retained the title with “Fyah” at Skinner Park, San Fernando on Saturday 16, February night. The singing duo brought colour and unity to the stage with performances by moko jumbies, Chinese dragons and fire dancers.

Second place went to Imran Beharry, GI, who was the crowd favourite. GI performed his popular song “Divorce” accompanied by Jamaican dancehall artiste, Beenie Man. Radio personality, Veekash Sahadeo, placed third with his song Chantel. Following the announcement, Mayhroo said he and Chatelal were using the platform to show a positive light on Trinidad and Tobago.

He said, “At the end of the day, it is all about the music. It is bigger than me, bigger than Neval, bigger than the monarch – it is all about Trinidad.” Chatelal said their mission was to elevate chutney music. Traditional chutney singer, Hemlata “Hurricane” Dindial, was the only woman to secure a position in the top tem places. Dindial who sang “Badalaa” placed seventh. The competition, which began at 8am, had 21 contestants. The show ended at 4am on Sunday. Express Chief Photographer DEXTER PHILIP attended this years competition and captures these images.
