STARTLING information about the 1990 attempted coup d’etat has finally come to light.

But it has raised more unanswered questions that have been swept under the carpet even 28 years after the event.

Former minister of agriculture in the NAR government Dr Brinsley Samaroo, speaking during a commemorative television programme Remembering 1990 on CCN TV6 on Friday night, revealed three details hitherto kept secret:

  • that the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was involved in helping local authorities suppress the insurrection by the radical Islamist group, the Jamaat al Muslimeen, led by Yasin Abu Bakr;
  • there was the possibility of Libya using Trinidad as a staging point for an invasion of Venezuela;
  • and that Venezuela was ready to swoop into Trinidad to prevent a Libyan invasion.
