AT least $60 million has been allocated to the Ministry of Local Government in 2020 so it can hire, clothe and arm hundreds of police officers in the 14 municipal corporations.

In yesterday’s Standing Finance Committee, Finance Minister Colm Imbert said the increase in the allocation of $20.23 million for salaries and allowances to the Ministry of Local Government was primarily for salaries and allowances for municipal police.

“They (the Ministry of Local Government) are recruiting (municipal officers) at this time,” he said, adding that the recruitment of the 1,400 municipal officers was being done through the Ministry of Local Government.

He was responding to questions from Caroni Central MP Dr Bhoe Tewarie.

Imbert also said the allocation of $12.5 million under the expenditure item-uniforms-was to outfit the municipal police officers.
