THE decommissioning of the St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital is not going to be a simple exercise. So said Prime Minister Keith Rowley on i95FM’s “Take Two” radio programme yesterday.
The Prime Minister said Government had taken a decision to build a new mental health hospital. But, he said he knew there would be issues involved.
Firstly, he said, he knows there is a point of view that mentally ill people should not be institutionalised. So the decommissioning has to be done in the context of what is proper mental health care in the 21st century, he said. He said the second issue that would have to be addressed is the location of the new facility since he anticipated that Government would face the NIMBY issue — “Not in my backyard” — where people don’t want the institution in their area.
