MONDAY, December 2 is the date of the local government election. Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley made the announcement via press release at 11.47 a.m. yesterday. At the time, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar was delivering her budget reply.
The life of the local government bodies expires on November 28, meaning that the Prime Minister has fixed the election for the earliest possible date, following the end of the term of office of local government representatives. The release said the writs of election would be issued in due course. Asked whether the announcement was an attempt to steal the Opposition Leader’s thunder, Government leader and People’s National Movement (PNM) vice-chairman Camille Robinson-Regis smiled and said: “I didn’t make the announcement.”
