A 24-year-old woman was found chopped to death at the St Helena home of a relative on Thursday.

The man suspected of killing Dolmatie Mungroo was found yesterday, hiding at a hotel in the area.

The 23-year-old man of El Carmen, St Helena, was found at a hotel off the Caroni South Bank Road near Piarco.

He was held about 12.40 a.m. yesterday, during a police operation by officers of the Central Division and the Las Lomas Police Station, led by ASP Smith and Sgt Figaro.

Police said they have intelligence the suspect was considering fleeing the country following the discovery of Mungroo’s body at his home.

Police reports said Mungroo was last seen alive about 7 a.m. on Friday when she left her family’s home in St Helena.

About 4 p.m., relatives visited the home of the suspect in El Carmen where they found the woman’s body.

She had been chopped on the head, neck and hands.

When the Express visited the area yesterday, neighbours said they were in shock over the incident.

“I wasn’t expecting anything like this at all. That boy does help (take care) of pigs with the girl family. Everyone knows everyone.

“She was sweet. He was cool and down to earth. I can’t even begin to tell you how this happened or why this happened. It’s just shocking. That’s the only way I can describe it. Shocking,” a neighbour said.

Mungroo’s relatives were not at home yesterday.

The Express was told Mungroo wanted to be a nail technician.

Gunned down in Arouca

Mungroo’s murder, along with the killing of a 36-year-old man near his home in Arouca, yesterday pushed the murder toll up to 442 for the year so far.

The toll stood at 435 at the same time last year.

The latest victim was Damian Mohammed, aka “Damie Barber”, of Arima Old Road, Arouca.

Homicide investigators said they were confused as the victim was not known to be involved in anything illegal.

But investigators said they found ten spent shells which made them suspect the killing was a hit.

Police were told that about 11 p.m. on Thursday, relatives heard a volley of gunshots.

Mohammed was found lying in a pool of blood on the northern side of his home.

The police and emergency health services were notified, but Mohammed died before they arrived, police said.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has revamped the United National Congress (UNC) team, letting go ten current MPs and replacing them with new faces to contest the August 10 general election.

“Thank you very much and goodbye.”

This is essentially what outgoing D’Abadie/O’Meara MP Ancil Antoine was told by the People’s National Movement (PNM) leadership yesterday.

Antoine was summarily removed as the party’s candidate for the 2020 general election following his “insensitive and objectionable statements” at a campaign meeting on Saturday.
