The Ministry of Education confirmed yesterday that all schools will be closed on Monday, December 2, to facilitate the Local Government election.

The Ministry issued a memorandum to school principals advising of the closure.

The memo also stated: “Principals are requested to attend school early on Tuesday, December 3, to ensure that furniture or equipment have been returned to their proper place of the school which was used as a polling station.”

According to the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC), the election is set to be contested by 339 candidates in 139 electoral districts.

The EBC stated on Wednesday that the People’s National Movement (PNM) and the United National Congress (UNC) are the only two political parties to have put forward a full slate of candidates.

In addition, the Congress of the People (COP), the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ), Movement for National Development (MND), the Port of Spain People’s Movement (PPM) and the National Transformation Party (NTP) have advanced candidates in some electoral districts.

Also included are eight independent candidates, the EBC said.
