The Ministry of Education confirmed yesterday that all schools will be closed on Monday, December 2, to facilitate the Local Government election.

The Ministry issued a memorandum to school principals advising of the closure.

The memo also stated: “Principals are requested to attend school early on Tuesday, December 3, to ensure that furniture or equipment have been returned to their proper place of the school which was used as a polling station.”

According to the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC), the election is set to be contested by 339 candidates in 139 electoral districts.

The EBC stated on Wednesday that the People’s National Movement (PNM) and the United National Congress (UNC) are the only two political parties to have put forward a full slate of candidates.

In addition, the Congress of the People (COP), the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ), Movement for National Development (MND), the Port of Spain People’s Movement (PPM) and the National Transformation Party (NTP) have advanced candidates in some electoral districts.

Also included are eight independent candidates, the EBC said.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has revamped the United National Congress (UNC) team, letting go ten current MPs and replacing them with new faces to contest the August 10 general election.

“Thank you very much and goodbye.”

This is essentially what outgoing D’Abadie/O’Meara MP Ancil Antoine was told by the People’s National Movement (PNM) leadership yesterday.

Antoine was summarily removed as the party’s candidate for the 2020 general election following his “insensitive and objectionable statements” at a campaign meeting on Saturday.

All police officers whose weapons were discharged during an incident that left three men dead in Morvant two Saturdays ago are to be placed on administrative duty.

The Express understands that this decision has been taken regarding “all” officers who would have fired their weapons during the encounter in which Morvant residents Noel Diamond, Israel Clinton and Joel Jacobs were killed.

Princes Town MP Barry Padarath says he will be home in time for the general election.

This, as United National Congress (UNC) officials confirmed Padarath was selected as the candidate for Princes Town in the August 10 election.
