TWENTY-TWO people have been arrested and six excavators seized in Arima by officers of the Illegal Quarrying Unit.

Officers conducted an Operation Strike Back II exercise in the Northern Division over a two-day period, aimed at clamping down on illegal quarrying practices, police said in a statement yesterday.

During the exercise, officers conducted surveillance of three illegal quarrying sites at Manuel Congo, Arima where they arrested 22 suspects and seized six excavators from the sites.

The exercise coordinated by DCP (Ag) Forde, ACP (Ag) James and Snr Supt (Ag) David was conducted between 11 a.m. on Tuesday and 5 p.m. on Wednesday and included personnel from the Commissioner of State Lands and the Office of the Director of Minerals, police said.
