Rio Seco Waterfall in Matura has claimed its second life in the space of just one week after another 19-year-old man drowned on Saturday evening.
The death of Stephon Logan, a student of Porter’s Lane, Siparia, follows that of Tristan Mathison, 19, of Warrenville, Guaico, Sangre Grande, who also drowned at the waterfall on June 20.
Police reports state that around 4 p.m. on Saturday, Logan and other members of a hiking group were in the water when he began experiencing difficulty, went under and didn’t resurface.
His friends, police said, searched into the night to retrieve his body, but were unsuccessful. A member of the group reported the incident to Matura police around 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Yesterday, a party of officers along with a rescue team comprising fire officers and villagers from Matura discovered Logan’s body around 10 a.m.
It was removed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mount Hope, where an autopsy is expected to be performed today.
Two Saturdays ago, Mathison also went on a hike at the waterfall with friends and family members when he too began experiencing difficulty and went under water.
His body was later retrieved by members of the hiking group.
