UNDEFEATED Bella Riva has failed to scare off other nominees for next month’s running of the 1,350-metre Royal Colours Classic, which is the first graded event for three-year-old horses.
It is scheduled to be run off on February 8 at Santa Rosa Park.
At the third nomination stage on Wednesday, all ten native-bred three-year-olds who were in at the second stage were nominated.
Bella Riva’s impressive record of three-from-three has failed to chase off her opponents. Trainer Fred De Freitas’ Star Apostle, who scored in gate-to-wire fashion unchallenged, presents a threat to Bella Riva. However, he will have to improve further, as he finished well behind Wise Guy, who was second to Airforce Won in the St James Stakes. Star Apostle finished sixth in the race.
Airforce Won’s runaway victory enhanced the form of the St James Stakes, and with expected improvement from maiden Wise Guy who appears to need a distance of ground and Star Apostle, the Royal Colours Classic could turn out to be an exciting contest to start the three-year-old season.
And this is so as Ultimately, who finished fourth to Bella Riva, was soundly thrashed by the Jeffery Francis-owned chestnut Star Apostle. The unraced Princess Steffani is also amongst the ten nominees.
Meanwhile, the industry stakeholders were assured that stakes and commission moneys were paid on Friday and next Tuesday, additional stakes and commission moneys will be paid for up to Day 17.
Here are the ten nominated fillies and colts and geldings nominated for the Royal Colours Classic.
