NATIVE-BRED three-year-olds outnumber the Jamaica-bred horses, after the fourth nomination stage for the running of this year’s 1,800-metre Guineas, which will be run off at Santa Rosa Park on August 1.

This event was scheduled to be contested on May 30, Indian Arrival Day, but was pushed back to August 1 because of the Covid-19 virus which caused the horse racing industry to be shut down.

At the first nomination stage, 21 horses were nominated. However, on Wednesday 14 were left in, comprising six Jamaica-bred and eight native-breds.

Undefeated native-bred filly Bella Riva representing trainer John O’Brien’s powerful barn heads the nomination. The Poon Tip Stud Farm bred filly is joined by stablemate Wise Guy, another native-bred (colt) in the two-turn marquee event.

The first nomination was also accepted on Wednesday for the 1,900-metre Midsummer Classic, the second jewel of the Triple Crown series, and the only new additions to the nominees in the Guineas are once raced Apache and maidens Mayalunga and Amani, who were not nominated for the Guineas.

Dropping out of the Midsummer Classic is Mighty Vegas, who was left in the Guineas despite his poor run on his debut. This event will be run off on August 31 along with the Independence Cup.

Nominations for the 1,800-metre Independence Cup, which will be run off on August 31, on the turf at Santa Rosa Park were also accepted on Wednesday, with defending champion Root Of Jesse amongst the 16 nominees.
