Have we reached peak fascist in Europe? Well, all right then, peak hard-right nationalist, but are we there yet? That would be reassuring, and three events in the past week give some cause for hope.

There is something very grati­fying about watching a poli­tical thug get hoisted by his own petard. Matteo Salvini, the hard-right populist who thought he could force an early election and become Italy’s strongman by breaking up the coalition government he served in, has publicly cut his own throat. And almost everybody is enjoying the spectacle.

Maybe we can get through the climate crisis without a global catastrophe, although that door is closing fast. And maybe we can cope with the huge loss of jobs caused by the revolution in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) without a social and political calamity.

FORTY years ago James Lovelock published his book Gaia: a New Look at Life on Earth, setting forth his hypothesis that all life on earth is part of a co-evolved system that maintains the planet as an environment hospitable to abundant life. Today his approach is known as “Earth System Science’’, and is central to our understanding of how the planet works. But back in 1979, he already had a warning for us.

IT has been suggested that Boris Johnson (who becomes the prime minister of the United Kingdom)is what you would get if Donald Trump had been educated at Eton and Oxford. Maybe, although there is a great gulf between Trump’s bombastic self-promotion and Johnson’s self-deprecating, rather shambolic persona.
